doesn’t sound like you are getting gas to unit. maybe the carberator isn’t working properly. ‘call a tech over and get a estimate on repairs . it is not safe to have this happening.
Is this one of those gas heaters that makes the snapping sound as it tries to light? If it is, then it is probably the igniter gone bad. It would not be the thermostat since it tries to light. I assume that it does not have a pilot light, but if it has a pilot light, then the thermocouple is bad.
try to make sure you keep the back vent clean on it, if that vent gets filled up with dust, its a saftey switch that kicks out keeps it from catching on freaking fire
