What is cheapest, easiest to maintain?
Any thoughts, I’m buying a heater and would love a reference on a good quality product by trade name.
Have to heat a home that is insulated, themal windows and about 1600 sq ft. Thanx!

I have a Carrier forced air furnace and it is great.. I am in Canada where it is very cold and it works great.. Here natural gas is cheaper than electricity.. we have to use a furnace 8 months out of the year.. you could also try wood heaters?? but are alot of work but very cost effective..

There is a lot to consider. As far as forced air, it has advantages such as integration of fresh air ventilation and air cleaning. The disadvantage is initial expense. As far as gas vs. electric that depends on your local utility rates. Another factor is that gas furnaces require more maintenance than electric. As far as brands are concerned, you can find a complete list of rankings as well as more info, at my source.

If you have any cold weather, N.G. is always cheaper. Carrier, Trane, or any other national brand should provide good service. I have a Carrier N.G. forced air system in this house, and don’t have any complaints other that having to use a humidifier in the winter. I used to live in a house that had a N.G. fired boiler that fed a forced air system that I loved, and if I were to build a house, this would be my preference. But the cost to retro fit with this type can be quite expensive.

A well insulated house can be heated quite efficiently with a Monitor or Toyostove heater. Installation is very simple and maintenance is a once a year thing. Monitors use kerosene and Toyo can burn kerosene or #2 fuel. I prefer #2 fuel as a heat source. It has more BTUs per dollar than any other fuel except firewood that you cut yourself. I don’t like forced air furnaces because they are too noisy. Forced hot water is better. Radiant is best.
