Oil filled radiator heaters - you can even buy some that are not hot to the touch in case you have little ones around.

We saved a lot on our electric bill last winter experimenting with these - and using the heat pump for backup.

For more info, see the Top Ten Tips to Save Energy:

Hope this helps!

Hello Greg

I think a calor gas fire works great and the bottle of gas lasts ages, also once when I was on a low income I hotted bricks in the oven they were wrapped in tin foil and then put them on the fire place in the front room you,ll be suprised how warm its gets.
Hope you get it sorted love its freezing this year.
Merry Christmas Greg x

I like the oil filled radiator looking ones. They put out enough heat to heat a large room, but are very adjustable, and not dangerous to operate around.

I bought one that looks like a small fireplace and I put it in a 13'x13' bedroom it keeps the room at a comfortable temp. it looks great and it is inexpensive to run ( about $5 a month)
Their avalible at Wal Mart and Lowes for around $80 I've had mine for two years and it still works perfectly (it's on24/7 during the winter)
